Jenn works closely with the rest of the team members, striving to ensure every client and their pets receive the best care possible.   Jamie
Veterinary Technician
Jamie is a native Texan who moved to Anchorage when her husband was stationed at Ft. Richardson. She grew up in Denton, Texas where she attended the University of North Texas and graduated with a degree in International Studies in December 2007.

Jamie has always had a passion for helping animals and took a keen interest in animal rescue after taking in two feral kittens—Nike and Tomcat—who are now 13. At the age of 15, she rescued her beloved Lab, Hershey, at the age of six, who she had until he passed at the age of 14 in March 2007. She rescued another chocolate Lab puppy in December of 2004 and named her Jessie. In May of 2007, Jamie found an abandoned six month old black Lab behind a restaurant in her hometown who was starving to death and needed medical attention. She named him Petey and brought him to her vet who got the little guy back on his feet. Petey and Jessie immediately bonded and he has been a much loved part of the family since. The dogs go pretty much everywhere that Jamie and her husband go and especially love trips to the lake or hiking. Jamie hopes to someday become a vet tech, start a Labrador retriever rescue and possibly breed Labs.

When Jamie is not working with animals, she spends her time engaging in the other activities she loves—doing outdoor activities, traveling, scuba diving and learning foreign languages.

    Frances Keough
Veterinary Technician
Frances
Frances is a lifelong Alaskan, born in Anchorage. She has always had a love for animals asking everyday for a horse until he parents finally gave in at age 8. She started her career working with animals at age 18, being hired on as a boarding assistant for a kennel that could house up to 60 dogs and 15 cats. Her career slowly progressed to all areas of working in a veterinary clinic, including intensive training in the grooming department, reception duties, assisting technicians and ordering of surgical supplies, retail items and food. She eventually outgrew this “jack of all trades” position and wanted to focus more on just veterinary medicine.

She took a job as a technician assistant at an emergency clinic in December of 2003 as well as a part time job for a general practice. Working every and all shifts for an emergency clinic as well as part time work for general practices. Frances gained experience in emergency medicine and triage, general surgery and anesthesia protocol, client communication and surgical assistance as well as patient care and pain management. She began her career as a veterinary technician and was responsible for all her patients in her scheduled area be it treatment, surgery or scheduled appointments every day.

In May of 2006 Frances decided she needed a change of pace and accepted a job with a veterinarian she had come to know well. This was with Alaska’s only veterinary ophthalmologist and a great learning experience. She found that this brought new challenges into her previous experience and was surprised how everyday protocols needed to be altered for ophthalmology. Pain management, anesthesia and even exams were done very differently. Here she learned to use paralytic agents, not commonly used in veterinary medicine. Although she loved this particular job and all it’s different duties and challenges, after working there for almost 2 years, the practice closed due to the owner moving out of state.

Frances has a passion for all animals but has a special interest in horses and has previously been a breeder of Pugs. She never has a dull moment at home with 3 Quarter horses; Charlie, Kay Cee and Cooper, 4 Pugs; Aurora, Erowyn, Zeeke and Olivia, a Rottweiler named Sierra, 2 cats; Zip & Laney as well as her fiancé Chris. She is hoping to acquire her license as a veterinary technician and is looking forward to working with the staff at Northern Lights Veterinary and Laser Center in 2008.

Veterinary Technician

I was born in Lowell, Ma and moved to Florida when I was six. This is about the time I started to realize my love for animals. I knew that some day I wanted to have a career in the veterinary field.

Soon after I graduated high school I finally got a job at a vet clinic in Stuart, Fl as a kennel attendant. When my boss saw my love for animals and how quickly I learned new things and how much I wanted to be a vet tech, he soon began training me to be a tech assistant. I caught on so quickly and seemed to just have a natural talent for the job.

I then started working at an emergency clinic in Stuart, Fl as a tech assistant which led to even more learning oppertunities. I moved to Homer, AK in 2005 and soon received a job at the Homer Veterinary Clinic. This is where I gained all the experience I needed to become a full time vet tech.

Now I am trying to further my education and will be taking the vet tech certification test so I can become a certified Veterinary Technician. I absolutely love being a vet tech and could not ask for a better job. Once I am certified, all of my career dreams will have come true. I now live in Anchorage, AK and work for a fabulous clinic who definitely puts the animals first.

My free time is mostly spent taking care of and playing with my own animals, my beautiful dog Isabelle and my two wonderful cats Majestic and Fantasia. They are my babies and there is nothing I wouldn't do for them. They remind me every day of why I love my job so much.

Heidi Zufelt, BS
Technician Assistant
Lacey - Northern Lights Veterinary & Laser Center Inc
I moved to Alaska this past July from Phoenix, AZ where I began my career as a vet tech. I previously lived in Anchorage when I went to UAA and achieved my Bachelor of Science degree in biology. My love of pets and wildlife has taken me in many directions from trying to take a porcupine’s temperature in Anchorage, to “hunting” scorpions in Phoenix, to wrestling with venomous reptiles in Australia, and now I have found myself back in Anchorage trying to aide in the health of household kitties and pups.

In my free time I love to play with my own loveable pets which include my beagle, Smeagle; a chocolate lab, Libby; and my two cats Tex and Slim.

Kobuk
Kobuk

“Kobuk” came to NLVLC, Inc. in February 2006. He was rescued by Stephanie W. after a severe strangulation injury damaged his right rear leg. Stephanie and a team of good Samaritans collected funds to bring him to Anchorage for evaluation and possible surgery. After being examined by Dr. Paula Schmidt it was determined that the leg would need to be amputated. Dr Schmidt donated her time and efforts and thus saved our furry friends life. “Kobuk” is now the shortest member of Team NLVLC, Inc. and remains unavailable for photos or interviews. He prefers to remain glued to Dr. Schmidt’s chair and focuses on the finer things in life—sleeping and eating.
